D8 visa conversion process in Korea
Date : 2025-11-21
-
- Background
- Applicant A, who is a senior engineer, was scheduled to be dispatched to Korea on an international assignment to participate in a project. However, the visa application process takes approximately 8–10 weeks, and the company did not have sufficient time available. Had he been unable to enter Korea and commence his duties according to the planned schedule, the company would have faced considerable operational and financial losses.
-
- Challenge
- To obtain a D-8 work permit visa in Korea, there are three steps to follow (VIN–VGN–RC). However, there was not sufficient time to wait for the VIN and VGN process, as he urgently needed to be in Korea but still had to obtain the work permit before starting work.
-
- Result
- In the end, Applicant A initially entered Korea visa-free and applied for a change of status to a D-8 work visa. Consequently, the RC registration was processed concurrently with the visa application, taking approximately three weeks, which allowed the company to meet the required project schedule.

- Solution
- To address this challenge, we recommend preparing the required documents in advance and proceeding with pre-screening at the immigration office to ensure that there will be no issues when applying for the visa in Korea. Pre-screening is necessary and highly recommended, as any additional requests from the officer can then be addressed in time before the formal application. As a result, we received positive feedback, and Applicant A was ultimately able to obtain the work permit successfully, on schedule.
